It's a new month and a new book over at the BIF Bookgroup. We're reading Dan Pink's latest Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us. I'm probably one of the few people in our community who has not read a Pink book so this is a real treat for me. In Drive, Dan draws on 40 years worth of scientific research and tackles the long-held assertion that people are motivated by external rewards. According to Dan, this carrot and stick approach is SO 20th century. Instead, motivation comes from autonomy, mastery and purpose.
So what motivates you? And what tools and techniques inspire you to action? Join us on Ning and jump into the conversation. New members are always welcome - anytime.
Our month-long conversation will culminate with a visit to the BIF studios by the man himself. Join us on March 29th at 9:00 a.m. for the unique opportunity to hear Dan talk about the book as well as his many adventures pushing against anecdotal and outdated wisdom about why we humans do what we do. (Address: Business Innovation Factory, 60 Valley Street, Unit 25, Providence, RI 02909). Registration details here.

I really enjoyed Pink's talk today and loved "Drive" as well. I have seen him speak three times and have really enjoyed it each time. Energy, smarts and great examples. I think his answer to the question about higher education at the end of the talk (how do you get tenured faculty across disciplines to work together) was not one of his better quips. First the question suggests that tenured faculty are resistent to working together . . . not true in my experience. Second, the question assumes the old "management" model (e.g., tenured faculty must be forced to arbitrarily work together) . . . which is an inappropriate model if you really understand faculty and tenured faculty. Third if the partnerships across discipline are not organic and natural no force of will, assistant provost or other administration or even presidential whim is going to change that.
